The scenic Village of Lumby, only 25 minutes from Vernon, is preparing for a sweet invasion on August 27th. For the second year in a row, it will be the site of the Lumby Butter Tart Festival & Contest.L
This year’s theme is “Back to Basics – Celebrating Old Time Goodness.” The contest just opened, and entries for the commercial and home -made contests are brisk. Contestants vie for the title of “Best Butter Tart” in two categories – traditional and non-traditional.
Seems everybody has a cherished family butter tart recipe with flaky pastry, gooey filling and melt-in-the-mouth goodness, but it’s also one of the most versatile desserts anywhere. You can put just about anything into a butter tart from the traditional raisins to bacon to Okanagan lavender – and it all tastes great! Vendors at the market are getting into the fun too – one promises butter tart bannock!
In the countdown to the Festival on August 27 organizers Donna Easto and Judith Farago expect to see a lot of Butter Tarts. “It’s only our second year, but if last year’s contest is any indication, we should have some outstanding traditional tarts and non-traditional ones too. The job of the judges couldn’t get any sweeter!” For information, or an entry form call: 778-473-0013
